Monday, November 7
Ada County Sheriff’s deputies have arrested an Eagle woman on charges of aggravated battery for her role in last week’s crash on State Street that injured two other drivers.
Zandra Sue Steck, 70, of Eagle, was released from the hospital and taken into custody by deputies late Monday afternoon. Steck was arrested on two charges of aggravated battery and a charge of malicious injury to property – all felonies.
The arrest warrant was issued by an Ada County District Court Judge on Nov. 3 based on evidence gathered during an investigation into the crash on State Street near Bogart Lane last Wednesday. Steck has admitted to intentionally driving her car into two vehicles travelling in the opposite direction. Steck was injured in the crash along with two other drivers. The 64-year-old male driver of a Ford F250 was ejected and remains hospitalized with serious injuries. The other driver, a 20-year-old male, received minor injuries and was treated and released.
Steck was booked into the Ada County Jail and is being held on a $1 million bond. She is scheduled to be arraigned on the charges at 1:30 pm Tuesday in District Court.
Previously released (Nov. 2): Ada County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating a crash caused by a woman who says she intentionally drove into oncoming traffic on State Street this morning.
Deputies were called to the incident just after 10:30 a.m. Wednesday on State Street near Bogart Lane.
Information and evidence collected so far shows a 70-year-old woman, of Eagle, was driving a Buick LaCrosse east on State near North Jennie Lane when she attempted to drive the Buick into the path of a vehicle going east on State. The driver missed the oncoming vehicle and drove back into the proper lane of travel to continue west on State Street.
As the 70-year-old approached Bogart Lane, she again drove across the center turn lane and drove directly toward a lifted Ford F250 pick-up truck driving west on State Street. The Buick hit the Ford in the rear of the driver’s side, causing the truck’s axle to dislodge. The Ford lost control and rolled. The driver, a 64-year-old male, of Eagle, was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected from the pick-up truck.
The driver of the Buick continued east and hit the front of the vehicle travelling directly behind the Ford pick-up truck. The 20-year-old male driver, of Boise, was wearing a seatbelt. He was transported to an area hospital where he was treated for minor injuries and released.
The 64-year-old driver of the Ford was transported to an area hospital with life-threatening injuries. He underwent surgery this afternoon and is in critical condition at this hour. His long-term prognosis is not known, however doctors say they expect him to survive.
The 70-year-old driver of the Buick was wearing a seatbelt. She was transported to an area hospital where she is being treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening. She has told investigators she intentionally drove into oncoming traffic in an attempt to end her life.
Criminal charges are pending against the 70-year-old Eagle woman. All of the evidence and information gathered during the course of the ongoing investigation will be routed to prosecutors to determine those charges. After charges are filed, the name of the woman will be released.
