Who can be an Explorer?
Anyone between the ages of 16-21 can apply to join the ACSO Explorer program. If you are interested in becoming an Explorer but aren't 16 years old yet, contact Detective Tony Eason at 577-3761.
What do Explorers do?
The main goal of the program is to allow young people the opportunity to explore the wide variety of jobs the ACSO has to offer. Explorers spend time in each division of the Sheriff's Office in order to experience what it is like to be a patrol deputy, dispatcher, detention deputy, records clerk…any position available in the agency! Explorers may also be called on to help control traffic.
What are the requirements?
An Explorer must attend two meetings a month, to include classroom training along with physical fitness training. Currently they meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month for 2 hours each time.
Explorers are required to maintain a 2.0 grade point average in school. Any trouble reported in school or at home may result in dismissal from the program.
How much time does an Explorer volunteer?
How much time you commit, beyond the required meeting time, is your choice. You can determine a schedule that works for you. Explorers may be called on to help ACSO School Resource Officers or volunteer at bike rodeos, the Fair and other community events, and are encouraged to take advantage of these opportunities.
The minimum number of hours to be completed each year for each section is:
- 10 hours in Records/Property/Crime Analysis
- 10 hours in Dispatch
- 10 hours in the Jail
- 20 hours in Patrol.
At least half the hours for Records, Dispatch and the Jail are to be completed before riding in Patrol. When all hours are complete for each section, a basic skills test will be given for each section.
How do I apply?
To be considered for the Explorers program, you must fill out an online application.
Your references will be contacted to ensure you are a good Explorer candidate. Advisors will also talk to your school counselor or School Resource Officer to determine your performance in school.
After your application is submitted, you will be scheduled for an interview. Your parents are welcome to attend. Once you've completed the initial interview, you will be asked to appear before an interview board before the final application consideration.
If you are accepted into the Explorer program, you can immediately start attending the bi-monthly meetings.
